Morten Gjerde er førsteamanuensis ved Institutt for arkitektur og planlegging. Han er også arkitekt og urban designar. Frå dette perspektivet ser han det bygde miljøet helhetlig, på tvers av rom og tid. Detaljer og diskrete utviklingsprosjekter bør knytes til og forsterke idear i stadig større skalaer, opp til byens. På dette området av arbeidet hans er han opptatt av måten individuelle prosjekter, ofte utført av private interesser, kan styres for å sikre forventingane til prosjektsponsoren samt for å bidra til breiare sosiale mål. Inkludert i disse måle er dei som er knytet til gatebildets utsjåande og estetikk.
