Professor i marine kybernetikk fra august 2009. Forskningsprosjekt: Arktisk Dynamisk Posisjonering; Autonome ismonitoreringssystem; Marine kraftstyringssystem.
Professorat i marin kybernetikk
Roger Skjetne er ansatt i et professorat ved NTNU under den maritime kunnskapshub'en. Skjetne vil forske innen flere områder. Det første er automatisk posisjonering av marine fartøyer, herunder "Arktisk DP: Sikker og miljøvennlig dynamisk posisjonering av marine fartøy i et arktisk miljø" og "feiltolerant og miljøvennlig design av dynamiske posisjonerings- og kraftstyringssystemer", altså å utvikle sikre og energioptimale systemer for å få skip til å ligge i ro selv under påvirkning av vind, strøm, bølger, og ulike istilstander. Dette er viktig for bl.a. supplyskip og drillrigger som vil jobbe på store dyp i arktiske områder.
Det andre feltet er styring av elektriske kraftsystemer om bord i skip, herunder såkalte Power Management og Energy Management systemer. Dette er viktig for å oppnå sikre og miljørobuste elektriske kraftsystemer ombord på marine fartøy.
Det tredje området er bevegelsesstyring av marine fartøyer, både styring av enkeltstående fartøyer og av formasjoner av fartøyer. Eksempler er automatisk styring av flere ubemannede undervannsfarkoster og hvordan de forholder seg til hverandre når de kartlegger sjøbunnen, i koordinert bevegelse med et overflatefartøy, eller styring av formasjoner av ubemannede fly som driver miljø- og isovervåkning i nordområdene.
Professoratet er sponset av Kongsberg Maritime, og er en del av Global Maritime Knowledge Hub. Hensikten med Hub’en er å koble næringsliv og forskningsinstitusjoner for å styrke Norges internasjonale konkurransekraft. Hub’en holder på å opprette 20-30 professorater innen ulike fagfelt som er viktig for den maritime næringen.
”Hvis du hovedsaklig er interessert i å få en god jobb, går du ut i industrien som siv.ing. Men hvis du vil være delaktig i teknologiutvikling og være en trendsetter, bør du ta doktorgrad,” sier Skjetne.
”For meg er det artige at jobben er å utvikle kunnskap, ny kunnskap er jobben min. I industrien utvikler og leverer du produkter og tjenester,” sier Skjetne.
