Research focus: TGF-β family signaling in cancer
Our research is focused on understanding the role of transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß family signaling pathways in multiple myeloma and other cancers. This includes ligands such as TGF-ß, activins, BMPs and GDFs. There is extensive redundancy in this family of ligands and receptors, and the effects of a given molecule will always depend on the context. Activation of the SMAD1/5 transcription factors by TGF-ß family ligands induces apoptosis in myeloma cells by downregulating the oncogene c-MYC. Potentiaion of SMAD1/5 activity represents therefore a possible treatment option for myeloma patients. We are also interested in the role of TGF-ß signaling in the context of the tumor microenvironment, particularly in relation to angiogenesis and dissemination.
We welcome students that want to study regulation of signaling in the TGF-ß family.

Forskning
Research focus: TGF-β family signaling in multiple myeloma and other cancers
Our research is focused on understanding the role of transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß family signaling pathways in multiple myeloma and other cancers. Receptor binding competition: A paradigm for regulating TGF-β family action
A striking feature of the TGF-β family is its promiscuity, i.e., many ligands compete for binding to the same receptors. Here, we discuss ligand-receptor competition and how ligands can function as agonists or antagonists depending on cellular context.
FKBP12 is a major regulator of ALK2 activity in multiple myeloma cells
FKBP12 interacts with TGF-β type I receptors, such as ALK2. We found that FKBP12 is a major regulator of ALK2 activity in multiple myeloma cells, partly by switching an NSC into an active signaling complex, but also be potentiating all activity via ALK2.
Cell surface marker heterogeneity in human myeloma cell lines for modeling of disease and therapy
Myeloma cell lines are important tools in myeloma research. Their use depends on resemblance to patient-derived cells. We compared cell surface marker expression in cell lines (protein + mRNA) with patient cell transcriptomic data (CoMMpass data set).
