The quantified selv: closing the gap between general knowledge and particular case?

illustrasjonsbildeThe article elucidates how the status that professionals ascribe to the body has vital implications for what they regard as relevant and how they interpret  the information they have collected. On this ground, we challenge both the prevailing and tacitly accepted separation between the physical body and human experience and the view of knowledge underpinning EBM ('evidence based' medicine) and PM ('personalized' medicine). The growing molecularization of the body veils decisive sources of human illness

Getting personal: can systems medicine integrate scientific and humanistic conceptions of the patient?

illustrasjonsbilde pcSystems biologists are currently unable to conceptualize living wholes, and seem unable to account for meaning, value and symbolic interaction, which are central concepts in humanistic medicine, as constraints on human health. Accordingly, systems medicine as currently envisioned cannot be said to be integrative, holistic, personalized or patient-centered in a humanistic medical sense.

Smoking during pregnancy: Childbirth and Health Study in Primary Care in Iceland

illustrasjonsbilde sigarettThe majority of Icelandic women who smoke stop when they become pregnant, and the prevalence of smoking during pregnancy in Iceland is still about 5 %. Our results indicate stronger nicotine dependence in women who do not stop smoking during pregnancy. Awareness of this can help general practitioners and others providing antenatal care to approach these women with more insight and empathy, whic might theoretically help them to quit.

Co- and multi-morbidity patterns in an unselected Norwegian population: cross-sectional analysis based on the HUNT Studyand theoretical reflections concerning medical models.

illustrasjonsbildeMultimorbidity appears to be prevalent in both genders and across age-groups. The disease clusters typically transcend biomedicine's traditional demarcations between mental and somatic diseases and between diagnostic categories within each of these domains.

A new theoretical approach to disease devlopment and recovery is warranted.

Drug use during early pregnancy: Cross-sectional analysis from the Childbirth and Health Study in Primary Care in Iceland

illustrasjonsbilde gravid kvinneOur results indicate that lack of a support network, stressful life events, and lower status in society may predispose women to more drug use. GPs and midwives responsible for maternity care could take this into account when evaluating risk and gain for women and foetuses in the primary care setting.
