Exploring lifestyle and risk in preventing type 2 diabetes – a nested qualitative study of older participants in a lifestyle intervention program (VEND-RISK)

Assessing a participant’s resources could improve the outcomes of lifestyle intervention programmes. Both family history and risk perception could be used in preventive strategies to enhance changes in lifestyle.

Patient experiences and the association with organizational factors in general practice: results from the Norwegian part of the international, multi-centre, cross-sectional QUALICOPC study

Norwegian patients report predominantly positive experiences when consulting a GP. Positive communication experiences are most likely to be reported when the GP has a medium sized patient list.

The new holism: P4 systems medicine and the medicalization of health and life itself

In the paper we explicate this holistic medicalization, discuss potential harms and conclude by calling for preventive measures aimed at avoiding eventual harmful effects of overmedicalization in systems medicine (quaternary prevention)

Medicine’s perception of reality – a split picture: critical reflections on apparent anomalies within the biomedical theory of science

Medical knowledge ignores central tenets of human existence, notably the physiological impact of subjective experience, relationships, history and sociocultural context. Biomedicine will not succeed in resolving today’s poorly understood health problems by doing ‘more of the same’.

How sociodemographic and hearing related factors were associated with use of hearing aid in a population-based study: The HUNT study.

About two third of 65 years and older participants had a hearing impairment higher than 25dB, but only one seventh used hearing aid. Use of hearing aid was associated with higher than basic education.

Health-related quality of life in older depressed psychogeriatric patients: one year follow-up

Older hospital patients with depression who experienced remission one year after admission gained health related quality of life (HQoL) and their HQoL was comparable with the HQoL in a reference group of older adults without depression when adjusting for differences in socio-demograhics and health conditions.

Applying clinical guidelines in general practice: a qualitative study of potential complications.

The GPs experienced negative consequences when obliged to apply a variety of single disease guidelines to multimorbid patients, including increased risk of polypharmacy and overtreatment.

Personalizing Medicine: Disease prevention in silico and in socio

Proponents of the emerging field of P4 medicine (defined as personalized, predictive, preventive and participatory) argue that computational integration and analysis of patient-specific ‘big data’ will revolutionize our health care systems, in particular primary care-based disease prevention.

'Informed choice' in a time of too much medicine - no panacea for ethical difficulties

Preventive medicine and expanding disease definitions have changes the ethical premises of informed choice and our good intentions may inadvertently advance overmedicalisation.

Nutritional risk associated with long term mortality in hospitalized patients with chronic heart failure

Mortality among patients with chronic heart failure is still high despite progress in medical and surgical treatment. In this paper nutritional risk is documented to be significantly associated with long term mortality.

Are coping strategies and locus of control orientation associated with health-related quality of life in older adults with and without depression?

illustrasjonsbildeThe aim of the study was to investigate relationships between coping and health related quality of life in older adults. This cross-sectional study included 144 depressed inpatients from seven psychogeriatric hospital units in Norway and 106 community-living older adults without depression.

Self Reported Childhood Difficulties, Adult Multimorbidity and Allostatic Load. A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the Norwegian HUNT Study

Med utgangspunkt i HUNT populasjonen har Margret Olafia Tomasdottir og medforfattere sett på sammenhengen mellom negative/vanskelige barndomserfaringer og multimorbiditet:

“We found a general, graded association between self-reported childhood difficulties on the one hand and multimorbidity, individual disease burden and biological perturbations on the other. The finding is in accordance with previous research which conceptualises allostatic overload as an important route by which childhood adversities become biologically embodied”

“Previous experiences and emotional baggage as barriers to lifestyle change - a qualitative study of Norwegian Healthy Life Centre participants”

Forfatterne konkluderer:
«Behavioural change can be hard to perform as psychological distress from life baggage can influence the ability to change. The study participants’ experience of being stuck in old habits and having substantial emotional baggage raises questions as to whether or not Healthy Life Centres are able to help participants who need to make a lifestyle change”

Patients’ ‘thingification’, unexplained symptoms and response-ability in the clinical context: in response to ‘Patients’ substantialization of disease, the hybrid symptom and the metaphysical care’, by Alexandra Parvan.

First, we will describe medically unexplained health problems as the background for an inquiry into a process wherein patients reify their suffering in order to meet their doctors on equal terms, which carries a potential for alienation. Second, we will reflect on Alexandra Parvan’s text as regards patients’ ‘substantialization’ of their disease, the resulting ‘hybrid symptom’ and a proposed model for care and healing.

Kjenner legen din deg - som person?

Bente Prytz MjølstadBente Prytz Mjøstad disputerte nylig med avhandligen «Kunnskap om pasienter som personer». Her tar hun opp i hvor stor grad leger egentlig kjenner sine pasienter.
