Bakgrunn og aktiviteter
Jeg ble ansatt som Førsteamanuensis i populasjonsgenetikk ved Institutt for biologi i 2014. For tiden er jeg leder for faggruppa Atferd og Evolusjon ved Institutt for biologi. I min forskning fokuserer jeg på problemstillinger i skjæringspunktet mellom genetikk, evolusjon, økologi og bevaringsbiologi.
Hovedsakelig bruker jeg bestander av gråspurv langs kysten av Helgeland som studiesystem. Jeg er også involvert i andre forskningsprosjekter der vi studerer blant annet fjellrev i Skandinavia (med Dr. Nina Eide og Dr. Øystein Flagstad på NINA), vånd på Helgelandskysten (med Prof. Stuart Piertney og Martha Gavan, Aberdeen University; Pål Thorvaldsen, NIBIO), og sebrafisk på lab (med Førsteam. Fredrik Jutfelt, NTNU).
Jeg ble ferdig med doktorgraden i 2002. Den hadde tittelen "Causes and consequences of individual variation in fitness-related traits in house sparrows". Under arbeidet med doktorgraden tilbragte jeg 1,5 år ved Institutt for Evolusjonsbiologi, Uppsala Universitet. I 2003 og 2004 hadde jeg en Post.doc.-stilling i bevaringsbiologi ved Institutt for biologi. 2005-2008 var jeg ansatt som forsker på Storforsk-prosjektet "Population genetics in an ecological context", og oppholdt meg da flere måneder ved Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, University of Sheffield. Perioden 2009-2012 var jeg prosjektleder på mitt eget prosjekt "The genetic basis of response to selection in natural populations – insight from state-of-the-art genomics analyses".
Jeg var også prosjektleder på prosjektet "The effect of population size on short-term rates of evolution in natural populations" som ble finansieres av Norges Forskningsråd. Prosjektet var tilknytta Senter for Biodiversitetsdynamikk (CBD) ved NTNU, og hadde finansiering fra 2013 til 2015.
I forbindelse med disse prosjektetene har vi sekvensert gråspurvens arvemateriale (genom) i samarbeid med forskningsgruppene til Glenn Peter Sætre, UiO, og Sigbjørn Lien, Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet. Vi bruker dessuten state-of-the-art genomiske teknikker som high density SNP-genotyping og genom-resekvensering til å belyse problemstillingene våre. Mye av dette arbeidet gjør jeg i samarbeid med Førsteamanuensis Arild Husby (CBD og Helsinki University). For avansert statistisk modellering og -analyser samarbeider vi med Professor Ingelin Steinsland og Professor Jarle Tufto ved Institutt for matematiske fag, NTNU.
