Us humans are experts in adaptation. This enables us to survive in deserts, outer space and north of the polar circle. To adapt successfully we use tools and technologies but do not change ourselves. Plants are also experts in adaptation. However, they do not use tools and technologies for adaptation instead they modify themselves during growth and development to survive and thrive.

Each plant cell is surrounded by a cell wall, which forms the interface with the surrounding environment and is therefore intimately involved in the adaptation to a changing environment. This makes cell walls also of critical importance when we try to understand how (food) crop plants respond to abiotic and biotic stress. Because cell walls are so important to plants, a dedicated mechanism exists, which monitors the functional integrity of the wall and makes adaptive changes in cellular and cell wall metabolism to maintain integrity. The Hamann research group is studying the mode of action of this mechanism for two reasons. First, we want to understand how plants perceive physical stimuli and translate them into chemical signals regulating plant adaptation to a changing environment. Second, we want to use the resulting knowledge to improve (crop) plant resilience against increased environment stresses caused by climate change.
