About me

I am a professor in instrumentation systems and safety at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, NTNU. I hold an MSc in Engineering Cybernetics (1993) and a PhD in the reliability of safety‑instrumented systems (2009), both from NTNU.

I have more than 15 years of industrial experience. My background includes work as an instrument engineer and offshore supervisor in the electrical and automation department at Phillips Petroleum (1993–1998), automation leader at Nidar (1999–2001), and principal consultant in risk and safety at DNV (2012–2014). Through these roles, I have gained extensive experience in the design and operation of process and manufacturing facilities.

From 2001 to 2005, I worked as a researcher in safety‑instrumented systems at SINTEF Applied Cybernetics. After completing my PhD and a short postdoctoral period, I became a professor at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in 2012, before moving to my current position at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics in 2019.

My research

At NTNU, I am actively involved in both industrial and research projects, many of them in close collaboration with SINTEF Digital's group Software Engineering, Safety and Security. My research focuses on industrial safety-instrumented systems, covering topics such as reliability analysis, design aspects, digitalization using Industry 4.0 technology platforms, and cybersecurity. More recently, I have also been adding how to use AI (and when not to) for safety-instrumented systems, and how it may impact major accident prevention.

The most defining research activities related to my work include: APOS project, APOS 2.0 project, and CBM project. Beyond that, I am a responsible supervisor of a postdoc project on cybersecurity of safety-instrumented systems, funded by SFI Norcics, and co-leading a work package on barriers within the 5-year AI center AI in Decisions (AID). I am also a deputy for  Professor Jørn Vatn of the subteam "Energiforsyningssikkerhet" that is part of the NTNU strategic area "Samfunnsikkerhet".

I have also taken on several leadership roles. I served as co‑director of the research centre SFI SUBPRO (2014–2023), focusing on subsea production and processing, and as director during the initiation and start‑up phase of SFI Autoship (2019–2022), an eight‑year research‑based innovation centre dedicated to autonomous ships for safe and sustainable operations.

My industry engagement

I value staying updated on industrial status as well as their challenges. It is important for keeping courses relevant as well as for defining new research initiatives. My key arenas, where I also contribute to their organization and program, include: PDS forum, CDS forum, NFEA sikkerhetssystemer (annual conference, here 2026 as an example), and NFEA Feltinstrumentering (annual conference, here 2026 as an example).  I am also involved in the maintenance team for IEC 61511, one of the central standards on functional safety of safety-instrumented systems for process industry. I am also following the status of IEC 62443, IEC 62061, and ISO 13489. 

Actually, I’m something of a nerd when it comes to standards—I actually enjoy reading them.

My education activities

I am teaching two master courses: TTK 4175 Instrumenteringssystemer og sikkerhet and TTK2 Pålitelighet av sikkerhetskritiske funksjoner (fordypningsemne). You can also read more about me here (in Norwegian). I am also one of four lecturers in the PhD course IIK 8010 Sikkerhet (meaning here security) av fysiske cybersystemer.

Forskning

My main research interests is the specifiation, design, and operation of complex control and automation systems, including safety and reliability analyses of systems critical to safety. Since 2018, my research has expanded to how functional safety can be ensured when considering the cybersecurity threats, countermeasures and the adaptation of industrial standards. Also, the use of open platform for sharing data within OT systems has also been a topic of more focus. Application area has included subsea and topside oil and gas facilities, railway signaling, and process industry. Cybersecurity has an increasing relevance for ensuring safe instrumention systems. Cybersecurity for industrial control and safety systems, under the umbrella of standards like IEC 62443, is therefore also a focus of my current work. Last to mention is that artificial intelligence is being introduced also to safety-critical systems, despite that the current version of IEC 61508 is not advocating this type of technology. New initiatives are ongoing on how to use AI with functional safety, and this is something that I monitor and is adding as perspectives in research and education.

  • APOS 2.0 (2023-2027) - A continuation of APOS 1.0 focusing on interoperable solutions for the exchange of data in relation to safety instrumented systems engineering and operation/SIL follow-up.
