Aurora Hoel (aka Aud Sissel Hoel) er professor i medievitenskap og visuell kultur. Hennes forskning dreier seg om bilder og bildeteknologi, særlig fotografi og visualisering, samt teoretiske spørsmål knyttet til mediering, kunnskapsdannelse og persepsjon.
I perioden 2015-2017 gjennomførte hun et to-årig forskningsprosjekt finansiert av H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowships. Prosjektet har tittelen Styles of Objectivity: Agency, Alignment and Automation in Image-Guided Surgery (IMAGUS). I den perioden dette prosjektet foregår er Hoel tilknyttet et tverrfaglig forskningslaboratorium ved Humboldt-universitetet i Berlin.
Hoel ledet det tverrfaglige NFR-prosjektet Picturing the Brain: Perspectives on Neuroimaging (2010-2014), som undersøkte bilders ulike roller som forskningsredskap, persepsjonsprotese og retorisk instrument i utviklingen av kunnskap om hjernen. Hun har redigert flere artikkel- og bokprosjekter om vitenskapelig bildedannelse og visualisering, blant annet Visualisation in the Age of Computerisation (Routledge, 2014) og Computational Picturing (2012), som er et temanummer av tidsskriftet Interdisciplinary Science Reviews.
I perioden 2003-2007 deltok hun i NFR-prosjektet Fotografiet i kulturen, der hun undersøkte fotografiets rolle som kontrollmiddel og identifikasjonsinstrument. Dette arbeidet resulterte blant annet i en utstilling om forbryterportretter, Maktens bilder, som så langt har blitt vist i Trondheim, Oslo, Stavanger, Elverum, Bergen og Tromsø.
Mye av Hoels forskning er knyttet til et langsiktig teoretisk prosjekt, som ble påbegynt i hennes doktoravhandling Fremstilling og teknikk: Om bildet som formativt medium (2005), og som dreier seg om å utvikle en "operative" bildeteori. Sentrale inspirasjonskilder for dette arbeidet er Ernst Cassirers symbolfilosofi og Maurice Merleau-Pontys persepsjonsfenomenologi. Dette prosjektet har blant annet resultert i to bøker om Cassirer, Form og teknikk: Utvalgte tekster (Cappelen, 2006) og Ernst Cassirer on Form and Technology (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012).
Aurora Hoel har et stort internasjonalt nettverk og har vært gjesteforsker ved Aarhus Universitet (2020), Københavns Universitet (2018), University of California, Berkeley (2015), Harvard University (2012), École polytechnique (2009), Stony Brook University (2007) og École des hautes études en sciences sociales (2005). Når det gjelder undervisning, veileder og foreleser hun bredt innenfor feltene medievitenskap og visuell kultur.
