Faglig innhold

The course in arts and crafts education is intended for students who want to learn how to devise courses and teach arts and crafts in elementary school. The course is open to all foreign students at Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The course will be taught in Norwegian and most of the literature will be in Norwegian. The course emphasizes a playful approach to activities within different materials and techniques in the subject areas: design, architecture, art history and culture studies, theory of teaching and learning/teaching pedagogies. Design challenges work on issues related to design and everyday aesthetics. The students will work with design processes related to products that primarily cover practical needs. Architecture focuses on the experience of indoor and outdoor spaces that affect our everyday lives. Knowledge of local construction practice and national style orientations through investigative and creative work linked to the local community. Drawing, using digital software and building different types of models, stimulate awareness of three-dimensional spaces. Art history and culture studies focuses on Norwegian and international crafts, design and architecture from historicism to the contemporary style. The field provides the fundament for planning lessons, experiences and also the development of knowledge and awareness of the different cultural expressions. Through exploring different cultural expressions one can see oneself and others in a historical and cultural context. Theory of teaching and learning/teaching pedagogies is integrated in the subject matter . The field comprises organized learning in arts and crafts, relevance and legitimization as a general-purpose subjects in school. The student will work with practical and creative processes to become a competent teacher and be able to use different forms of assessment which contribute to the pupils' learning.

Knowledge

The student:

  • has knowledge about materials, techniques, tools and aesthetic devices that are common when working with pictures and sculpture
  • has knowledge of the main trends in the visual arts and sculpture, and the development of contemporary art
  • has knowledge of art theories and how expression of different cultures, nationally and internationally can be a resource for their own creative work and earning
  • has knowledge of the main elements of the history of art, and methods
  • has knowledge of current rules on copyright and privacy in the use of sources, images and other resources for teaching
  • has knowledge of the basic skills such as preparation for teaching elementary teaching and how the aesthetic dimension can be included in multidisciplinary relationships

Skills

The student:

  • can develop an idea into a finished form, document and evaluate their creative process, demonstrate practical skills and be a good role model for pupils
  • is able to use drawing in their work with pictures and sculpture
  • can experiment with and use key materials, tools, instruments and techniques for working with pictures and sculpture
  • can choose the appropriate materials, techniques and tools that are suitable for tasks in primary education, handle tools and simple machinery, knowledge ofsafety procedures (HMS - routines)
  • can work with images using basic digital tools
  • can use the community as a resource and gather information as a starting point for practical work and as a resource for student assignments
  • curate simple exhibitions, make different types of presentations to enable pupils to work with the exhibition of their own art work
  • can contribute to the development of basic skills in arts and crafts elementary training
  • can make the tasks that promote basic skills in arts and crafts
  • is able to implement learning-oriented assessment practices
  • is able to use simple analytical tools and teach art in various ways, and see the connection between the various cultural expressions, children's creativity and their own work

General competence

The student:

  • can use cultural differences in student group as a resource and use different ways of expressions as a starting point for assignments and professional conversation
  • can use digital learning tools for dissemination of academic material and their own professional development - can promote recycling and sustainable development
  • can use arts and crafts in interdisciplinary activities in and projects and ensure the aesthetic dimension in education in collaboration with other disciplines and elementary training.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

The module has several obligatory sessions, mostly introductions to assignments on the use of materials and techniques together with excursions to collections and art museums. The module is set up in according with the working methods of the current curriculum for primary schools. Theory teaching will mainly be done in class, while the practical training takes place in smaller groups. The practical individual work will take place in the workshops, with teacher-or student-led supervision. There are considerable amounts of self-study in some periods. The study consists of practical creative work and theoretical study. Reflection around students´ own and others' work is central. Students will work with technical and topical issues. Documentation of work processes can be carried out as analog or digital sketches. For both administrative and teaching purpose, the course makes extensive use of the Learning Management System, Blackboard. All teaching and communication between staff and students, both oral and written is in Norwegian. As well as taking part in teaching sessions, students are responsible for self-study. I addition there are obligatory course requirements which must be fulfilled.

Mer om vurdering

The following activities have mandatory attendance:

1. Introduction to- and summary of the areas design and architecture

2. Up to 3 excursions

In case of absence from excursion, compensatory work is given. Mandatory work requirements are assessed with approved / not approved.

Examination:

Part 1: Individual exhibition. An exhibition consisting of the student´s creative works from the areas of design and architecture. If not all the tasks are presented in the exhibition it will affect the grade. There are no aids for individual exhibition.

Part 2: Individual written exam. The written examination will document knowledge in the areas of design, architecture, art history and cultural studies and theory of teaching and learning/teaching pedagogies.

Aids for the written exam: Print from current curriculum - The part that concerns art and crafts.

Partial assessments can be addressed or improved individually.

All sub-assessments must be passed in order to obtain a grade in the course.

There is an opportunity to complain about partial assessments in the course.
