CV

Professor James D. M. Speed

My research involves a range of taxa from vascular plants and bryophytes to invertebrates, birds and mammalian herbivores. I work at a range of scales, from the individual to the biome, with short term experiments to palaeoecology, and from local scale patterns to regional and biome scale processes. Developing interests are biogeography and ecoinformatics. I have worked in environments from the high-arctic and temperate-alpine regions to boreal forests and African savannahs. I am interested in understanding diversity patterns in terms of species interactions with their environments and evolutionary relationships. A further core interest involves disentangling the interactive impacts of vertebrate herbivory and climate on plant populations and communities and ecosystem ecology.

I am a member of the editorial board for the journal Ecology and formerlly of Ecological Monographs

I have been a fellow on the NTNU Outstanding Academic Fellows programme and a holder of a Research Council of Norway Young Research Talents project.

Long-term trends in global flowering phenology

We apply machine learning models to 8 million herbarium specimens to examine how flowering seasonality has changed around the world. Flowering date shifted by 2.5 days per decade but with very high regional variation, especially at lower latitudes.

A regionally coherent ecological fingerprint of climate change, evidenced from natural history collections.

Using natural history collections to investigate how climate change impacts across ecological responses, taxa and scales

Airborne laser scanning reveals uniform responses of forest structure to moose (Alces alces) across the boreal forest biome

A network of moose exclosures across the boreal forest biome shows that moose have consistent effects on forest structure and carbon storage.
