Faglig innhold
The course will introduce the student to key cellular and molecular mechanisms relevant to central nervous system organization, structure, and function. These include fundamental biology of the neuron, synaptic transmission, myelination, axonal transport, growth and guidance, and basic brain microcircuit organization. Furthermore, the course will cover fundamental principles of neuroplasticity as well as key cellular and network dynamics determining nervous system function, but also responses to injury and neurodegenerative disease.
As part of the course, students will complete an oral presentation assignment of a scientific paper based on a literature search of a relevant topic. Topics for the assignment are related to the content of the course. The assignment is evaluated as passed/failed. Students must pass the oral presentation assignment before taking the exam.
Læringsutbytte
After completing and passing the NEVR3001 course the student should be able to:
- Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of the cell biology of the neuron, neuron-glia interactions, neuronal communication, and signal integration across neuronal assemblies.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of how molecular genetic and electrophysiology tools can be applied in the study of neural systems.
- Communicate a comprehensive understanding of structural and functional connectivity, and key neuroplasticity mechanisms underlying nervous system organization and function.
- Apply critical thinking and draw upon key concepts from the course to communicate a basic understanding of how neural networks respond to injury or disease, including the role of neuroplasticity in the restoration of function.
Læringsformer og aktiviteter
Lectures, team-based learning (TBL), participation in group-based work/discussions, and an oral presentation assignment.
The course is taught in the autumn semester with a final examination in December. The language of teaching and examination is English.
This course has restricted admission. Students admitted to the MSc in Neuroscience programme are guaranteed a place. Other students must apply for a place by the given deadlines.
Compulsory assignment
Student seminar - Oral presentation of a scientific paper
Obligatoriske aktiviteter
- Oral presentation assignment
Mer om vurdering
Regular final examination is given in the autumn semester only. Students with legitimate leave of absence at the final examination and students who receive the grade F may take a re-sit examination in the spring semester. In case of only a few candidates, the re-sit examination may be conducted as an oral examination.
Compulsory assignment:
The compulsory oral presentation assignment is valid only for two academic years.
Specific conditions
Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
Spesielle vilkår
Begrenset opptak til undervisning. For nærmere opplysninger: http://www.ntnu.no/studier/opptak/emneopptak
Obligatorisk aktivitet fra tidligere semester kan godkjennes av instituttet.
Anbefalte forkunnskaper
- We recommend that NEVR3002 (Sensory and Motor Neuroscience) is taken in parallel with NEVR3001. We highly recommend that the students take the Neuroscience MSc courses in sequence (NEVR3001/NEVR3002, NEVR3003, NEVR3004), as they build upon one another.
- NEVR2010 (Introduction to Neuroscience) or equivalent background.
Forkunnskapskrav
We recommend that NEVR3002 (Sensory and Motor Neuroscience) be taken in parallel with NEVR3001. Students will also benefit from taking NEVR3000 (Literacy in Science), as it will provide an opportunity to develop literacy skills that are relevant for the compulsory assignment of this course. We highly recommend that the students take the Neuroscience MSc courses in sequence (NEVR3001/NEVR3002, NEVR3003, NEVR3004), as they build upon one another.
NEVR2010 (Introduction to Neuroscience) or equivalent background
Kursmateriell
Reading materials (textbook chapters and scientific papers) that supplement each lecture will be listed on the course syllabus and will be made available to students electronically at the start of the term.
