Faglig innhold

The course aims to develop an understanding of sound-based electronic music, primarily made with electronic and digital tools. through listening/observation, discussion, reflection, and practical work in music technology and composition. Teaching has its point of departure in close study of a selection of pieces of music from the electroacoustic repertoire. With the aid of relevant literature, discussion and practical work, the students’ listening skills and ability to reflect using a shared conceptual apparatus is developed. Furthermore, students will engage in individual performative and compositional work using tools for composing with spatial audio, sensor-based control of digital musical instruments and tools for processing audio offline and in real-time.

Knowledge:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • can explain how different factors shape the listening experience and what role different listening perspectives have in different situations
  • have knowledge of relevant theories and their core concepts
  • has knowledge of forms of sound-based electronic music and their respective performance practices
  • should be able to relate their own as well as others` musical expressions to relevant aesthetic contexts
  • has acquired knowledge of relevant tools such as tools for composing with spatial audio, sensor-based control of digital musical instruments and tools for processing audio offline and in real-time

Skills:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify and analyze experienced musical/sonorous and performative qualities and structures and describe these with established concepts
  • can utilize the acquired knowledge in individual compositional and performance practices
  • can reflect independently and critically on his/her own as well as others musical expressions
  • locate and engage with relevant international literature and artistic outcomes within the field
  • can present their work in relation to relevant academic and artistic contexts, both orally and in writing.

Lectures, workshops, individual and group assignments and one-to-one supervision.

About the compulsory assignments:

Some assignments will focus on analysing existing musical works and/or performances, presented either in written or oral form, individually or in groups. Other assignments will focus on the application of tools presented in the course in musical composition and performance. There will be a total of 7-8 assignments largely given on a weekly basis.

  • Assignments: all assignments in the course have to be approved
  • Satisfactory participation (at least 80%) in workshops and lectures

Mer om vurdering

The course exam consists of two components. The first is an individual compositional work utilizing the techniques learned during the course, lasting between 4 and 8 minutes, accompanied by an oral presentation discussing various aspects of the work and the compositional process. The second is a written academic paper that presents this work in terms of artistic intentions, result, process, evaluation and relevant artistic and academic contexts. The written part has a formal requirement of 3-4000 words.

If one part of the examination is failed, only the failed part has to be retaken.

Forkunnskapskrav

Requires admission to the Master's programme in Creative Music Technology. By sending an application to the department other students can get admission to the course. Csound is a key tool in the course, and students without prior experience are required to attend a one-week introductory course, which will begin the week prior to the first lecture.
