Faglig innhold

This course builds on the practical and theoretical foundation laid out in the course Art and Ocean 1 with an emphasis on turning hypotheses, reflections and ideas from semester 1 into practice. It will further investigate the role of art and the work of artists when it comes to addressing global challenges regarding the future of the oceans. Uncertainty, complexity, and fluidity within ocean research are challenging the borders of conventional forms of knowledge production. It opens up opportunities for interventions carried out within new alliances of agencies and collaborations. The production of knowledge across different fields of artistic practices and scientific research creates new understandings of the world we live in.

Læringsutbytte

By the completion of this course the student has advanced knowledge of relevant artistic research projects within the subject field and an overview of the discourses on art and science in art history and theory. The student can demonstrate a thorough insight into a variety of opposing and overlapping methods and issues of artistic and scientific research.

Through assignments, individual or/and collective work the student is able to analyse existing theories, methods and interpretations on the subject of art and use relevant methods for his or her own research and artistic development work.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Through lectures and assignments, the course will further explore research methodologies from the fields of life sciences, technology, social sciences and the humanities and compare them with methods of artistic research. The class will continue to analyse and discuss issues of interdisciplinary methods and artistic research in general and on the topic of ocean in particular. Through theoretical and practical exercises, mapping of relevant research projects and literature, fieldtrips and by connecting to relevant research environments across NTNU or beyond the students will work and develop an individual and/or collective project.

Additional information will be provided at the start of the semester.
