Nanomechanics in Structural Engineering

Nanomechanics, as a branch of nanoscience, is dealing with the fundamental mechanical properties of physical systems at the nanometer scale. Examples include nanoparticles, nanocoatings, nanocomposite/nanostructured materials, nanofluids, and so on. The integration of nanomechanics in structural engineering will bring new materials, unique functions, and revolutionary solutions to build complex structural systems. How the nanoelements influence and impact the performance of macroscopic systems crossing length scales and disciplines, needs to be answered. The latest development and novel applications of nanomechanics in structural engineering will be identified and studied by the group.

Relevant competency

The groups in the village choose the theme by interest. Very basic knowledge about nanoscience and nanotechnology will help to understand the themes.

About the village

Nanomechanics is the study and characterization of the mechanical behaviour of nanomaterials as well as material systems and structures at nanoscale. In the past, nanomechanics has been well developed and implemented in emerging fields like energy and functional materials, micro and nanoelectronics, nanofluids and biomedicine. However, the application in structural engineering lags behind due to length scale mismatch. In the village, the groups will employ new methodologies in nanomechanics, identify the key topics in structural engineering, provide knowledge and deep understanding, and offer possible solutions to Norwegian industry and society. 

The group will get supervision from professors, Postdoc and PhD researchers at NTNU Department of Structural Engineering, depending on the topic identified. The possible topics can be one of the specific research questions in the following fields or discussed between the groups and supervisors.

  • Nano-enabled anti-icing for ice-free surfaces and structures
  • Multifunctional nanocoatings and nanocomposites
  • Nano-reinforced cement and concrete for building materials
  • Multiscale methodology for structural materials
  • Ethical aspects of nanotechnology in structural engineering

  • The focus on teamwork skills and group processes is the unique feature of Experts in Teamwork (EiT)
  • EiTs teaching methods depend on the contribution and presence of every participant throughout the semester. For this reason, attendance is compulsory on every village day.
  • In contrast to many courses, the first few days are especially important in EiT. During this period, get to know each other and discuss what each individual can contribute. You will also draw up the compulsory cooperation agreement and start preparing a shared research question.
