Research interests

Biomineralisering er levende organismers dannelse av komplekse uorganiske strukturer, og er en vidt utbredt prosess i naturen. En av de mest spektakulære eksemplene på biomineralisering finner man hos kiselalger, som er en gruppe av encellete alger med stor økologisk betydning. Celleveggen til kiselalger er bygget av silika (silisiumoksid), og danner en tredimensjonal struktur med komplekse, artsspesifikke poremønstre helt ned til nanometer-skala. Denne strukturen produseres inne i cellen, i et samspill mellom silika, organiske forbindelser og proteiner. Prosessen skjer i spesielle blærer kalt silika-deponeringsvesikler (SDV). Vi har etablert geneditering i kislelalgen Thalassiosira psudonana og bruker dette verktøyet til å karakterisere ulike gener involvert i biomineraliering. 

Jeg vil høsten 2023 starte opp et nytt prosjekt som vil har som mål å kombinere bioteknologi og nanofotonikk for å lage skreddersydde biologisk baserte fotoniske krystaller. Prosjektet er basert på oppdagelsen at enkelte kiselalger danner fotoniske krystaller av høy kvalitet i den silikabaserte celleveggen. Kiselalger har derfor potensial til å fungere som plattform for produksjon av svært kostnadseffektive, miljøvennlige og naturlige fotoniske krystaller for en rekke ulike bruksområder.
