Stillinger og forskningsinteresser

Mine forskningsinteresser kombinerer klinisk og basal kreftforskning (translasjonell), med hovedfokus på biomarkører for tidlig kreftdeteksjon, prediktive og prognostiske biomarkører, genomomfattende analyser og mekanismer for behandlingsresistens.

Vi har utviklet HUNT Lung Cancer Model, et verktøy for risikoprediksjon av lungekreft.

Forskningen min har i stor grad vært rettet mot mesoteliom, en asbestrelatert kreftform, men har de senere årene også omfattet lunge- og magekreft. Jeg har publisert studier om biomarkører i serum og vev ved mesoteliom og magekreft. Spesielt innen mesoteliom har jeg initiert og gjennomført kliniske studier på tidlig deteksjon i pre-kliniske serumprøver, i samarbeid med Kreftregisteret, Janus Biobank og National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases ved University of Western Australia, Perth. Ved vår forskningsavdeling har vi utført tre genekspresjonsstudier ved FUGE (Functional Genomics)-kjernefasiliteten med Affymetrix U133 Plus 2 og Illumina HumanHT-12 v3 Expression BeadChip på mesoteliom- og normale pleuraprøver.

De siste årene har et samarbeid med en ledende bioinformatikkgruppe under ledelse av Prof. Ioannis Tsamardinos ved Universitetet på Kreta resultert i utviklingen av HUNT Lung Cancer Model, en nettbasert kalkulator og flere nye publikasjoner.

Siden november 2010 har jeg samarbeidet som gjesteforsker og veileder med Nanjing Medical University, Kina, med fokus på mesoteliom, lunge- og magekreft. Dette inkluderer samarbeid med onkologer ved Nanjing Medical University og uavhengige prosjekter med Yuyao People’s Hospital (Zhejiang-provinsen, Kina) og University of Tokyo, Japan. Ett av disse prosjektene resulterte i en av de første studiene som knytter mesoteliom hos kvinner til yrkesmessig asbesteksponering i Kina.

HUNT Biobank i Levanger, Norge, er en av Skandinavias største biobanker, med serum og kliniske data fra omtrent 120 000 deltakere. Siden mai 2011 har jeg samarbeidet med HUNT for å identifisere tumorspesifikke mikroRNA i pre-diagnostisk serum. Cancer-Biomarker-HUNT-prosjektet har som mål å oppdage biomarkører i serum for tidlig deteksjon av lungekreft og mesoteliom.

Vi har utviklet en validert klinisk risikomodell og nettbasert kalkulator for lungekreft—HUNT Lung Cancer Model—som, kombinert med GWAS og pre-diagnostiske mikroRNA-data, kan forbedre screening og diagnostikk. Dette arbeidet inngår i EARLYSCREEN-prosjektet.

For tiden leder vi E-Lung-studien, som har som mål å utvikle nye polygenetiske risikomodeller, sammenligne HUNT-modellen med PLCOm2012, samt utvikle en app for røykeslutt som et verktøy for fastleger.

Siden 2013 har jeg vært gjesteforsker ved Aalborg Universitetssykehus, Danmark. Aalborg, hovedstaden i Nordjylland, var vertskap for Danmarks eneste asbestfabrikk (Eternit), som behandlet 80 % av all asbest importert til landet. De langsiktige effektene av asbestbruk har ført til at insidensraten for mesoteliom hos menn er 2–3 ganger høyere i Nordjylland enn i andre danske regioner. Vi har nylig dokumentert miljømessig påvirkning på mesoteliomrisiko hos kvinner og for første gang identifisert kimlinje-gener som disponerer for mesoteliom, i samarbeid med University of Chicago.

Siden 2018 har jeg hatt en 20 % professorstilling ved Institutt for klinisk og molekylær medisin, NTNU, Trondheim, og Levanger sykehus, samt en stilling som overlege i onkologi ved Levanger sykehus.
