Om

Jeg har bakgrunn fra cochleafysiologi og har spesialisert meg på biofysiske (otoakustiske emisjoner, fremkalte potensialer) og psykofysiske (tinnitusmatching, høreterskler) målinger av det indre øret hos pattedyr, inkludert, men ikke begrenset til, mennesker. Jeg har mer enn 20 års erfaring med forskning på en rekke ulike temaer, men det overordnede temaet har alltid vært å få en bedre forståelse av hvordan det indre øret fungerer. Jeg er overbevist om at det å studere ulike organismer og deres spesialisering i forhold til deres individuelle lydlandskap hjelper oss til å forstå bedre hvordan og hvorfor vi mennesker hører (og ikke hører) slik vi gjør: Låveugler og ørkenrotter har lært oss hvordan hørselssystemene våre hører og analyserer romlige lyder, og fugler har hjulpet oss å forstå fordelene med et flerkomponent-mellomøre.

I løpet av det siste tiåret har det vært en økende bekymring for lyd fra tekniske kilder som vindturbiner i det lavfrekvente (mellom ca. 20 og 250 Hz) og infralydområdet (under 20 Hz).

Eksponering for infralyd har blitt beskyldt for å utløse en rekke vage og noen ganger invalidiserende symptomer, som svimmelhet, angst, søvnforstyrrelser og hjertearytmi. Siden lydnivåene noen ganger har vist seg å ligge under høreterskelen i klagernes hjem, har det blitt spekulert i om disse utslippene likevel kan ha negative effekter på menneskers helse. Det betyr at andre sansesystemer med antatt lavere terskel enn hørselssystemet påvirkes. For å kunne gjennomføre en grundig risikovurdering av lavfrekvente utslipp og infralyd er det nødvendig med en bedre forståelse av hvilke sansesystemer som er involvert i prosesseringen.

Jeg er interessert i hvordan det indre øret prosesserer lavfrekvent lyd og infralyd, og hvorfor det forårsaker irritasjon hos en betydelig andel av befolkningen.
