Hovedinteresser:

Italiensk og europeisk kunst fra middelalderen og renessansen med vekt på ikonografiske problemstillinger. Andre interessefelt er: mariaikonografi, typologi, kontrasten mellom hellige og verdslige portretter i renessansen, nevroestetikk, fascismens estetikk og karikaturer / karikaturstrid.

Symmetry in Art and Science

Et tverrfaglig forskningsprosjekt

Tanken om at vårt univers er strukturert symmetrisk kan føres tilbake til antikken og er fortsatt et spørsmål som opptar deler av moderne vitenskap. Hos 16- og 1700-talls filosofer og vitenskapsmenn som Newton, Leibniz og Kant var denne hypotesen utgangspunktet for en diskusjon om hvorvidt 'høyre' og 'venstre' eksisterer i seg selv, uavhengig av menneskelige konvensjoner. Spørsmålet om hva som er naturlig gitt og hva som er kulturelt betinget er kanskje mer aktuelt enn noen gang. Det planlagte forskningsprosjektet Symmetry in Art and Science vil samle forskere fra ulike disipliner, fortrinnsvis fra begge sider av det tradisjonelle skillet mellom naturvitenskapene og humaniora/samfunnsvitenskap, om forskning på symmetri og persepsjon av symmetriske former. Hensikten er å drøfte det vitenskapelig grunnlaget for menneskets opplevelse av-, og preferanse for-, symmetri. Videre ønsker vi å undersøke om symmetrien i estetikken har noen betydning utover det at den oppfattes som vakker og harmonisk. Den symmetriske form assosieres med spesifikke verdier eller kvaliteter, som 'orden', 'stabilitet', 'enhet' og 'helhet'. Asymmetri assosieres gjerne med de motsatte kvaliteter. Prosjektet ønsker å undersøke såvel det estetiske aspektet ved disse kvalitetene som deres meningsskapende potensiale.

Forskning rundt perspesjon av symmetri og symmetriens relasjon til den estetiske opplevelse er et allerede eksisterende forskningsfelt innen enkelte disipliner. Innen kunsthistorien har derimot slike forhold bare vært viet sporadisk oppmerksomhet. Ved å rette oss mot dette feltet ønsker initiativtakerne å lære. Samtidig er vi av den oppfatnig at ikonografiske studier kan føre forskningen videre fra undersøkelsen av hvilke former som stimulerer og behager og hvilke deler av hjernen som aktiveres. Vår hypotese er at symmetri/asymmetri også gir assosiasjoner til noe som statisk/dynamisk, evig/temporalt, nærværende eller dominerende.

Slike grunnformer er ikke i seg selv meningsfulle, men er likevel en forutsetning for den visuelle fremstillingen av f.eks. bevegelse eller skille mellom et narrativt og et symbolsk meningsinnhold. I ytterste forstand problematiseres her også den etablerte dikotomien mellom form og innhold som det tyvende århundrets kunsthistorie tradisjonelt har sett som eksterne i forhold til hverandre.
