Om

Banafsheh Ranji is a postdoctoral research fellow in sociology. She has been researching and teaching media and communication studies as well as migration and racism studies. Banafsheh is the author of the book Journalistic Practices in Restrictive Contexts: A Sociological Approach to the Case of Iran (Routledge, 2022). The book is based on her PhD research, for which she was awarded the King's Gold Medal (Hans Majestet Kongens Gullmedalje) in 2020, an award recognizing outstanding young researchers for their significant contributions to their field.

Currently, she is involved in the following three research projects:

  • The discourses of 'integration' and the construction of the immigrant subject. The project focuses on how immigrants are portrayed in the educational materials for Norwegian language courses, and how these portrayals intersect with immigrants' material lives.
  • Racism in the Norwegian media and its impact on immigrats' belongniness.
  • Communication strategies of authoritarian states in legitimizing repression: The case of Iran.

    Positions held:
  • Senior researcher at the Peace, Conflict and Development Research Group, Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (Norsk Utenrikspolitisk Institutt), 2022.
  • Researcher at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, 2022.
