Om emnet

Faglig innhold

The course will cover the generation and application of High Throughput Data (HTD) and -omics technologies within the Life Sciences, with particular focus molecular medicine, precision medicine and translational medicine. Technologies and examples will be related to projects at several of the Core Facilities at MH Faculty. The curriculum will be based on relevant scientific papers in molecular/precision/translational medicine. For proteomics there will also be a lab-demonstration. The following topics will be covered in the course:

  • Sequencing Technology and Genomics
  • Transcriptomics
  • Proteomics
  • Epigenetics and gene regulation
  • Epitranscriptomics and DNA/RNA modomics
  • Molecular Imaging
  • Bioinformatic tools, resources and data analysis
  • Systems Biology
  • Model Systems

Læringsutbytte

Knowledge

The candidate can

  • Know the principle of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology
  • Describe the content, structure and application of HTD data from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, epitranscriptomics and molecular imaging
  • Know the main mechanisms for epigenetics and gene regulation analyzed by HTD and bioinformatic analysis
  • Give an overview of online data resources and bioinformatics tools which commonly used to analyze and visualize HTD
  • Know how model systems can be used for hypothesis generation and validation
  • Know how Systems Biology can be used to obtain additional biological insight from HTD.

Skills

The candidate can

  • Perform online bioinformatics analysis using data from HTD experiment, an interpretate the output.
  • Consider and evaluate various HTD platforms and model systems in molecular/precision/translation medicine projects
  • Find relevant online resources and large scale projects within molecular/precision/translational medicine, and retrieve information and data from these resources.
  • Read and understand scientific papers and figures using HTD data for molecular/precision/translational medicine, and then briefly summarize their content and main message

Competence

The candidate can

  • Suggest relevant HTD platforms for projects within Life Science, and explain how the project can benefit from generating data from these platforms
  • Interpretate the output from online bioinformatics HTD analysis
  • Explain and discuss HTD results from scientific papers with colleagues and students
  • Collaborate interdisciplinary regarding interpretation, discussion, selection and presentation of relevant results from HTD analysis
  • Obtained basic competence for further work with HTD projects, including Master/PhD projects involving Core Facilities at NTNU and other institutions.
