Faglig innhold

In this course you will study the molecular biology of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses which cause infection in humans. We will focus on selected infectious diseases causing both sporadic infections and outbreaks, and the microorganisms, which cause these diseases. You will study the clinical presentation of the disease and its epidemiology, the genome structure of the microorganisms, the mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer, virulence factors and how the microorganisms cause disease, and antimicrobial resistance. Further, you will learn about molecular methods for diagnosis and genotyping of microorganisms. You will also get experience with basic bioinformatics methods for analysis and comparison of nucleic acid sequences, both nucleotide and genome sequences.

Læringsutbytte

After completion of the course the student should be able to demonstrate a strong general knowledge in molecular medical microbiology:
• have good knowledge about the molecular biology of microorgansims
• have good knowledge about selected infectious diseases and their epidemiology
• have good knowledge about molecular methods for identification and quantification of microorganisms
• have good knowledge about molecular methods for genotyping of microorganism agents, and their use in the investigation of infectious diseases
• have basic knowledge about bioinformatics methods and be able to perform for analyses and comparison microbial nucleotide and genome sequences.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Lectures, a bioinformatics exercise and a compulsory written assignment. Written exam and the compulsory written assignment count 50% of the final grade each.

Mer om vurdering

Retake of exam: If the assignment is passed in a previous semester, it is sufficient to retake the written exam. If the assignment is not passed, both the assignment and the written exam must be re-taken.


The language of instruction is English, and the exam must be answered in English.
