Faglig innhold

The course is intended for an in depth study of power transformers. Briefly the main topics of interest are history design, application, planning, installation, and maintenance.
The two books chosen are valid references. The J&P Transformer Book is at its XII edition and has been published since 1925. It has been accepted as standard work of reference by electrical engineers concerned with transformers. The second book (2004) gives a comprehensive treatment to nearly all the aspect of transformer engineering, from the basic transformer theory to the more challenging latest trends in transformer technology; modern computational techniques are analyzed together with theoretical basis. The book is also a valid source of references; some of them will be used to explore the phenomena in more depth. Both publications are intended for postgraduate students, utility engineers, transformer designers and researchers.
The main aspects treated in the course are now explained in brief. First a recall to the transformer theory is essential to introduce the problems. Transformer construction is then presented. Active and passive parts of a transformer are analyzed in the detail. This include the study of construction procedure and basic materials required for windings, iron core, insulation parts, tank, switchgear and the most important ancillary equipments. Thermal, strength withstands, and electrical characteristics are also of interest. Phenomena occurring during the operation of a transformer are investigated. These are transformer connection, noise, stress, and transient and surge phenomena. Finally particular feature of special transformer are point out (transmission transformer and autotransformer, converter transformer for HVDC, system and distribution transformer).

Læringsutbytte

The course shall give in depth knowledge and understanding of the transformer design and operation. Important elements are knowledge about the relationship between the requirements and design implementation of the transformers. The student shall master the theoretical foundation for dimensioning and design. Knowledge of the historic development shall give the student insight into the factors driving modern day development and optimization.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

The course is organized as a self study course with regular weekly meetings. The meetings represent an important discussion point with debates, analysis and remarks about the selected issue.
The course is given every second year, next time fall 2010.
