In welfare technology, a concern for caring for people with special needs is vital. Technologies such as AI, VR/AR and social robots are part of our lives, but are they contributing to our wellbeing?

Introduction

In the future welfare technology must be a strong focus on caring for each other. Supporting people with special needs or impairments, and contributing to their inclusion in society, will be central. The village will use the synergies promoted by interdisciplinarity to propose innovative and disruptive ideas based on technologies such as AI, VR/AR and social robots promoting goodness for a happier life.

Relevant competency

A broad interdisciplinary composition in this village is desirable, and students from all study programs and academic backgrounds are welcome.What is important is not your area of expertise but the intention and motivation you bring to it.

About the village

Digital technologies are only useful if they promote inclusion for all. Governments feel pressure to take swift action to address the challenges of today, such as the increasing mental health problems in young people and the lack of qualified workers to support an ageing population (the so-called "ageing wave"), and they are looking at how technology can help mitigate these problems. This village explores how new welfare technologies are changing the way we live today, and aims to suggest ways forward. The village draws from interaction with ongoing research projects to inspire students to create showcases for future welfare technology and its application in society.

External partners

This village counts on strong international collaboration, with external partners in Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland and Italy. The partners contribute as mentors to the projects. They challenge the students with ideas and proposals for innovative and exciting projects and orient them in the execution of their projects.

Virtual Experts in teamwork (VEiT)

This village is virtual and students from all campuses meet here. All teaching and group work takes place using online collaboration tools. Students in virtual villages must take part both with their camera switched on and with a microphone available.

Attendance

Intensive village: Teaching and group meetings take place between 8.00-16.00 Monday to Friday weeks 2-4. Individual work is also expected.
