Business and Technology – From Silos to Synergy

In this course, business students acquire an understanding of manufacturing and technology, while engineering students learn how to embed these technologies into profitable and sustainable business models.

Innovation is a core component of the course, and students are introduced to, and coached in, proven innovation methodologies.

Business models and marketing strategies will be developed in parallel with product development or the implementation of new technologies in manufacturing. The resulting models must demonstrate a clear grasp of the underlying technology and its value-creation potential for both shareholders and society.

The project groups choose their own topics. Each team defines its own problems, opportunities, technologies and methods. We highly recommend aligning your project with the focus of your master’s programme to maximize its relevance. Professors from your respective master's programmes will provide input and supervision as far as time allows.

A curated list of potential themes and challenges is provided to inspire and guide your project selection. Throughout the semester, you will also have access to the IHB manufacturing laboratory (“Manulab”) for prototyping and testing.

Relevant competency

The village is tailored to students attending the three master programmes in Ålesund:

• International Business and Marketing
• Management of Innovation and Sustainable Business Development
• Mechatronics and Automation

The course builds on the core competencies of each program and prepares you for roles that require both commercial and technological acumen.

• Business students who want a technical foundation to complement their strategic skills.
• Engineering students who wish to learn how to commercialise their innovations and understand market dynamics.
• Anyone eager to work in self‑selected, real‑world projects that intersect technology and business, and who wants to leverage the unique resources of Campus Ålesund.
• Students who prefer a physical village. This village will be the only physical option on Campus Ålesund spring 2027.
