Bakgrunn og aktiviteter

Jeg er fungerende leder ved Senter for autonome marine operasjoner og systemer (NTNU AMOS) og professor i navigasjon og fartøstyring ved Institutt for teknisk kybernetikk, NTNU.

Mine forskningsområder er matematisk modellering og simulering av fly, marine fartøy, ubemannede farkoster og reguleringsteknikk. Dette inkluderer fartøystyring, estimatorbaserte navigasjonssystemer (treghetsnavigasjon og kamerabaserte systemer).  Jeg har skrevet 6 internasjonale bøker og jeg er en av gründerne av selskapet Marine Cyberentics AS (2002) som i dag er en del av de maritime tjenestene i DNV GL. Jeg er involvert i en rekke nye høyteknologiselskaper i Trondheimsregionen og jobber med etablering av nye selskaper.

  • Arch T. Colwell Merit Award i 2008 ved SAE World Congress for Nonlinear Observer for Vehicle Velocity Estimation skrevet sammen med  L. Imsland, T. A. Johansen, J. C. Kalkkuhl and A. Suissa.
  • Automatica Best Paper Prize i 2002 for "Nonlinear Passive Weather Optimal Positioning Control (WOPC) System for Ships and Rigs: Experimental Results, Automatica", vol. 37, 2001, pages 701-715 skrevet sammen med Jann Peter Strand.
  • IFAC MCMC'15 Best Regular Paper Award for a paper entitled "A Virtual Vertical Reference Concept for GNSS/INS Applications at the Sea Surface" sammen med Torleiv H. Bryne and Tor Arne Johansen.
  • ExxonMobil-prisen til PhD-studenter i 2000, 2003 og 2005 for beste PhD-avhandling ved NTNU
