I am genuinely interested in sea ice, its physics and role in the environment. My research on sea ice began with my diploma thesis in 1996, where I studied Arctic deep water formation in Storfjorden, Svalbard. The origin of Arctic deep water is linked to saline brine released from growing sea ice, a process that only can be understood and modelled when properly including sea ice thermodynamics, mechanics and dynamics. After this modeling experience I came first in contact with real sea ice during my stay in Longyearbyen, Svalbard as a Marie-Curie stipendiate (1999-2000). My daily walks from my appartment to the office along the shore of an ice covered fjord, as well as many demanding field experiments, raised my fascination for sea ice and its many different phenomena. During that time I also learned that sea ice microstructure and crystal growth are a poorly understood topics, and turned my phd into this direction. Interrrupted by a teacher education in Germany in 2003/2004, I finally defended my phd thesis on sea ice microstructure at the Geophysical Institute (GFI) at the University of Bergen in 2007.

From 2007-2013 I continued working at GFI, mostly with topics related to sea ice physical processes in the climate system. During that time I established new fundamental research of sea ice, based on X-ray imaging at synchrotron radiation facilities. This research has always been guided by the challenge to incorporate micro-scale sea ice physics into larger scale models of ice-atmosphere-ocean interaction, climate and engineering applications.

In the coming years I extended my expertise to applied engineering problems where sea ice microstructure is relevant. Since February 2015 I have been working at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (IBM) of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) with applied topics like sea-ice-oil interaction, sea spray icing, saline ice interaction with concrete, always making use of X-ray tomography to study the 3D pore space of sea ice and saline ice media, continously exploring the potential of synchrotron-based X-ray tomography. In an onging project (Microstructure of sea spray ice, RCN-Norway, 2020-2025, with industrial partners Equinor/Norway and Anaxam/Switzerland) synchrotron-based results have turned out to open new paths in understanding the formation and properties of sea spray ice.   

As a member of the ice team of the MOSAiC expedition, the largest central Arctic expedition ever (https://mosaic-expedition.org/ , Sep 2019- Oct 2020) I have been coordinating the micro-tomographic imaging activities of MOSAiC sea ice cores. I am coordinating an upcoming experiment (Jan 2024) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, to scan sea ice cores from MOSAiC. For the first time full (10 cm x 100-200 cm) cores will be imaged at reasonably high resolution (~10 micron) to provide a unique 3D microtomographic dataset for the study of sea ice properties in the climate system.

Forskning

My main research is on models and observations of the microstructure and properties of porous ice media. An important topic are the physical properties of sea ice and how they are related to its microstructure. As this microstructure depends on many factors (growth conditions, temperature, salinity of sea ice) and evolves with time, and as field data are difficult to acquire, such research is challenging. To make progress I am using innovative Digital Rock Physics (DRP) methodology with the key paradigm "image and compute". It is based on X-ray
tomographic imaging and digitizing of the sea ice pore space, followed by numerical
computation of its physical properties. 

With my research I aim to improve our understanding of fundamental sea ice properties by deriving microstructure-based parametrisations for larger scale applications. These include sea ice modelling in the climate system and sea-ice-structure interaction for engineering applications, but are also higly relevant for the sea ice ecosystem, pollution issues (e.g. oil spills) and remote sensing of sea ice. I am also applying Digital Rock Physics methods to other porous ice media relevant for the enviroment and industrial applications.  

The following list of applications describes I apply novel knowledge on microstrcture of porous media: 

  • physical properties of sea ice and their role in the climate system (e.g. sea ice albedo, permeability)
  • engineering properties of sea ice (e.g. elasticity, strength)
  • scaling of sea ice properties (microstructure ->engineering scale -> geophysical scale)
  • atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction (e.g. ice growth -> saline brine fluxes -> deepwater formation)
  • sea spray ice and marine icing (e.g. on ships, platforms, wind turbines, fish farms)   
  • interaction of oil with sea ice
  • sea ice biogeochemistry
  • remote sensing of sea ice
  • saline ice interaction with structures (e.g. salt frost scaling on concrete) 

My main research methods are:

  • field and laboratory experiments with ice and sea ice
  • X-ray microtomography (to obtain 3D images of saline ice and porous media)
  • synchrotron-based X-ray microtomography (e.g. fast imaging, high resolution, contrast enhancemet)
  • Digital Rock Physics (to obtain structural properties from 3D images)
  • modelling porous ice media (transport properties, fluid flow, conduction and diffusion)

 

I am concerned in the dissemination of sea ice related research (in particular climate change, sustainable engineering) and engaged explaining these to citizens. 

Microstructure of sea spray ice. Prediction of icing on marine structures (MICROSPRAY, 2020-2025)

MICROSPRAY investigates sea spray icing by means of nondestructive 3-d X-ray micro-tomography to gain new fundamental knowledge of microstructure and adhesion properties of sea spray ice. Project number 308786, Research Council of Norway, 2020-2025.

Network for X-ray computed microtomography evaluation of snow and porous ice media (XRTICENET, 2018-2020)

The network's objective is to offer interested Norwegian ice and snow researchers a simplified rapid opportunity to test X-ray microtomographic imaging for their field samples and applications. Project number 283875, Research Council of Norway, 2018-2020

Digital sea ice physics: proof of concept (DIGSICE, 2021-2022)

Undervisning

In previous positions I have been teaching university courses in physical oceanography (GFI, UiB) and sea ice physics (UNIS). As a researcher at NTNU I am little involved in teaching, yet mostly in supervison of Phd students.

Is, Polhavet og klima: Lære fra nordpolarekspedisjoner (ISPOLÆR, 2020-2022)

I prosjektet ISPOLÆR har vi gjennoført de planlagte tiltak for voksne og skole-elever og møtt en god del interesse i flere områder, fra klima og is på gobal skala, ekspedisjoner i Arktis, til is-eksperimenter på verkstedet. Project 310767, RCN Norway
