In the period 2015-2017 I was a postdoctoral fellow in the faculty-funded research project Enlightenent News: Periodical Publications, Newspapers and the Digital Archive. My project was entitled ‘Advertising the Novel in Eighteenth-Century Newspapers: marketing a genre in Britain, Ireland and North-America,' and it was concerned with investigating one of the most understudied types of text of the eighteenth century: newspaper advertisements of novels - which have recently become accessible and and machine-readable through major online databases. I am interested in various types of early modern popular literaure and mediations of popular literature in newspapers and periodicals.

Research interests

  • European broadside ballads and popular street literature
  • Scandinavian "Skillingsviser" (skiling ballads)
  • Early modern newspapers and periodicals
  • Digital humanities
  • Literary consumption and advertising
  • Eighteenth-century British and French epistolary fiction
  • Literary critiism
  • Sentimental novels
  • Contemporary popular romance fiction
  • Literary hierarchies and literary sociology
  • Book history
  • Gender studies
  • Abolitionism in fiction and images

Publictions

I have published numerous articles on both Scandinavian and British literature and culture. The topics of my works include Norwegian and Scandinavian ballad culture, digital humanties, British epistolary novels, periodical criticism, bibliography, lost novels and authors, and literary appropriation. I am the co-editor of a recently published book entitled Travelling Chronicles: News and Newspapers from the Early Modern Period to the Eighteenth Century (Brill, 2018).

In my doctoral project, ‘The Sentimental Novel and its Critics, 1769‐1796’)  I investigated the reviews of a group of previously unstudied sentimental novels in eighteenth‐century periodicals, arguing that the way in which periodicals of the period attacked minor novels paved the way for the foundation of new boundaries between ‘high’ and ‘low’ in eighteenth-century culture.

Teaching

I have taught on BA and MA levels in both comparative literature (ALIT) and English, covering most genres and periods.

Outreach experience

I take a very keen interest in contemporary literary culture, and I am regularly involved in literary festivals, reading, media interviews and panel discussions.
