Research interests
I work on a wide range of topics within literary and cultural studies: theatre history, novels, the visual arts, song lyrics, literary adaptation, lotteries and literature, news and literature, experimental fiction, and literary editing. Most of my work concerns British culture, but I am also interested in the global currents of cultural transfer. Many of my personal research projects concern eighteenth-century topics, but when it comes to teaching and the supervision of theses (at BA and MA levels) I embrace a far wider time period, from the Renaissance to the present day.
I believe the best humanities research involves individual exploration within collaborative frameworks and I am connected to a number of local, national and international research groups, projects and networks. At NTNU, I am a co-leader of two research groups: 'Song Studies' and ‘Literary and Cultural Eighteenth-Century Studies’ (LACES). I am also a Senior Researcher on the project ‘The Invention of the Lottery Fantasy’ (funded by the Norwegian Research Council). I am a member of the Sanglyrikk research group, based at the University of Agder, and am integrated in the international eighteenth-century studies milieu through work for the Laurence Sterne journal, The Shandean, and the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.
Personal projects I have underway include: a book on eighteenth-century lotteries and the theatre (for the Cambridge University Press ‘Elements’ series); an article on an anonymous novel, Edal Village (1780), and the author Laurence Sterne; a book chapter on the songs of Robyn Hitchcock; ongoing work on eighteenth-century theatre and the actor-playwright Charles Macklin.
I have supervised more than 60 MA theses and 3 PhD theses to completion. If you think I may be suitable as a supervisor for your research project (BA, MA or PhD), please get in touch and we can discuss possibilities. If we find I’m not suitable, I’ll try to direct you to someone who is.

Background
I was born and educated in Britain. I have a BA in English from the University of London, an MA in English and Art History from the University of Wales, Lampeter, and a PhD in English from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. I have worked at NTNU since 1997, initially as a Senior Lecturer and, from 2004, as a Professor. As one of NTNU's many immigrant workers, I am keen to foster the inclusion of international staff in all areas of university life.
