Professor i visuell kultur ved Institutt for kunst- og medievitenskap, leder av forskergruppen Media, Data, Museums. Nina har utdannelse fra Storbritannia, der hun først studerte fotografi og siden tok mastergrad og doktorgrad i kunsthistorie ved Birkbeck, University of London.
Forskningen hennes utforsker den visuelle kulturens arbeidsformer, systemer, teknologier og infrastrukturer fra 1800-tallet og framover. Et sentralt tema er hvordan fotografiske teknologier og praksiser lever videre i digitaliserte arkivmaterialer. Boken Picture Research: The Work of Intermediation from Pre-Photography to Post-Digitization handler om bildebransjens rolle i den lengre historien om digitalisering fra 1830- til 2010-tallet, og kom ut på The MIT Press i 2023.
Nina underviser ved bachelorprogrammet i medievitenskap og masterprogrammet i film- og medievitenskap om temaer som mediehistorie og medieteori, forskningsdesign og vitenskapsteori, såvel som visuell kultur.
Forskning
Prosjekt
Sammen med Anna Näslund ved Stockholms universitet arbeider jeg for tiden med prosjektet Bilder som säljer. Bildekonomi och kommoditisering 1820-2020, som finansieres av det svenske Vetenskapsrådet 2025-2027. Dette prosjektet setter dagens hype rundt generative KI-teknologier i et lengre historisk perspektiv, gjennom å studere hvordan bilder har fungert som salgsfremmende agenter for ny teknologi i over 200 år, og hvordan denne funksjonen er blitt teoretisert både innenfor og utenfor akademia i samme periode.
Veiledning
Jeg er interessert i å veilede master- og phd-prosjekter med et materialistisk og kritisk perspektiv på systemene, teknologiene og arbeidsforholdene i den moderne bildeøkonomien. Jeg veileder ikke innenfor kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid eller praksisbasert forskning.
Selling Pictures: Pictorial Economy and Commoditization, 1820–2020
The project traces the genealogy of contemporary AI-generated image hype over 200 years of promoting technologies for the production, reproduction, and circulation of pictures on a mass scale.
