CV

Founding Director of Centre for Algorithms in the Cortex and Co-Director of the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience. PhD in neurophysiology, University of Oslo 1995.

May-Britt Moser is interested in the neural basis of spatial location and spatial memory, specifcally, and cognition more generally. Her work, conducted with Edvard I. Moser as a long-term collaborator, as well as the identification of other functional cell types, including head direction cells, border cells, speed cells and object-vector cells, as well as recent mechanisms for representation of episodic time – findings that collectively point to the entorhinal cortex as a hub for the brain network for representation of space and experience. She has shown that this network has adult-like properties from very early age in rodents, pointing to a possible innate basis for spatial coding by the brain.

Their current focus is on unravelling how neural microcircuits for space and time are organized as interactions between large numbers of diverse neurons with known functional identity, a computional neuroscience endeavour that is significantly boosted by the technological development of Neuropixels probes and 2-photon miniscopes for freely-moving rodents. While the Mosers’ main focus is on the normal and healthy brain, their work has direct implications for our understanding of the etiology of Alzheimer’s disease, which at the earliest stages is characterized by neurodegeneration in the very same brain circuits for space, time and memory that the Mosers are investigating in normal brains.

May-Britt Moser received her initial training at the University of Oslo, under the supervision of Dr. Per Andersen, on the structural basis of hippocampal memory. She has been a professor at NTNU since 2000. She has received numerous awards for her work.

May-Britt Moser was a co-Founder of the Centre for the Biology of Memory, a Research Council-funded Centre of Excellence from 2003 to 2012, and has taken on the Directorship of the Centre for Neural Computation, from 2013 to 2022 and the Directorship of the  Centre for Algorithms in the Cortex - Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience - NTNU.

Nobelprize in Physiology or Medicine 2014: May-Britt Moser share the Nobel Prize with Edvard I. Moser and John O'Keefe.
