Vår forskning fokuserer på terrestriske økosystemer og ligger i grensesnittet mellom samfunnsøkologi og evolusjonær biologi. Vi studerer interaksjoner mellom genotyper og arter, samt de evolusjonære konsekvensene av disse interaksjonene. Vi undersøker også hvordan biotiske samfunn reagerer på miljøendringer, både via plastisitet og evolusjon, og hvordan de påvirker økosystemfunksjoner og -tjenester. Ettersom terrestriske samfunn består av en uløselig over- og underjordisk komponent, integrerer mye av vårt arbeid mønstre og prosesser på begge sider av jordoverflaten.
Vi tester for tiden hvordan klimaendringer og tilhørende endringer i biotiske samfunn påvirker økologien og evolusjonen av planteforsvar, ved hjelp av avlingers ville slektninger som markjordbær (f.eks EU BiodivERsA prosjekt PlantCline). Et anvendt aspekt av vårt arbeid er søket i ville plantearter for arvelige egenskaper som gir motstand mot eller toleranse for både biotiske og abiotiske stressorer, som kan ha gått tapt i relaterte kultivarer (PhD-prosjekt av Steven Zwartkruis, med Prof. Thorsten Hamann).
Annen pågående forskning fokuserer på effekten av permafrosttining på jordsamfunnssammensetning og klimagass-sykling (i samarbeid med førsteamanuensis Hanna Lee) og på rollen til jord og vegetasjon i restaurering av habitat og urban revilling (i samarbeid med Prof. Bente Graae).
Vi undersøker også hvordan klimaendringer endrer de interaktive effektene av overjordiske insekter, sopp og bløtdyr på plante- og jordsamfunn (PhD-prosjekt av Sidonie Loïez). Vi utfører denne eksperimentelle forskningen i fjellene på Dovre som en del av det globale forskningsnettverket BugNet.
