Om
The compositional nature of language makes it stand out as one of the most complex human abilities that we possess. We can understand sentences we have never heard before, just by knowing what the containing words mean and what the rules by which they are put together are. This fact has been taken to imply that we need a general mechanism (or mechanisms) that allows us to systematically combine the meaning of simple words in order to derive the meaning of more complex sentences.
Although a fundamental property of the human linguistic ability, compositionality has proven very difficult to study in terms of its implementation in the brain. This is partly due to an often lack of intersection between linguistic and processing theory, and partly due to the difficulty of isolating compositional processes from the myriad of other processes the brain is involved in during language comprehension. The aims of the PhD project are to characterize the neural bases of the combinatory mechanisms that produce the meaning of sentences and phrases from the meaning of individual parts. Using a novel experimental paradigm, direct neurophysiological measures such as EEG and guided by theoretically grounded experimental questions, the project will directly tap into the neural processes involved in the composition of linguistic meaning. The project is hosted by the Language Acquisition and Processing Lab at NTNU and is done under the guidance and supervision of prof. Giosuè Baggio (NTNU) and prof. Gillian Ramchand (UiT).
