Neuroepigenetics - Base Modifications in Cognitive Function

Genomic DNA is continuously challenged by endogenous and exogenous oxidative agents, thus preserving genomic integrity is a key for development and health. Base excision repair (BER) is the major pathway for removal of oxidized bases in the genome. BER is initiated by DNA glycosylases, recognizing and excising a broad range of base lesions. However, processing of oxidized base lesions to avoid DNA mutations seems not the main activity of DNA glycosylases but they rather have a novel role in regulating the epigenetic landscape. The main focus of my research is to unravel the molecular mechanism and function of DNA glycosylases in epigenetic remodeling in brain, thus laying the basis for novel diagnostic- and therapeutic strategies for brain-related disorders.

Next-Generation Translational Medicine in Alzheimer's disease

AD is a complex age-related neurodegenerative disorder that affect millions of people worldwide. With the steady growth of life expectancy, AD has become one of the biggest health challenges of our society. The underlying mechanisms that contribute to the development and progression of AD are still not fully understood, and no treatment is available to halt or delay the disease. We aim to adress these challenges by etablishing a platform for patient-derived cell models to reveal novel molecular pathways leading to AD.
