Jonathan Lewis Knowles
Om
My areas of interest lie mainly within theoretical philosophy, especially philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology/cognitive science, epistemology, philosophy of science and philosophy of language. Most recently I have worked on issues concerning the interrelationships amongst representationalism (in various different domains, e.g. about thought and perceptual experience), realism, naturalism and the possibility of substantive metaphysics, taking my lead from neo-pragmatist thinking.
My monograph Representation, Experience, and Metaphysics: Towards an Integrated Anti-representationalist Philosophy was published in 2023 by Springer. In recent papers I discuss Richard Rorty's and Huw Price's disagreement about truth (see https://nordprag.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/NSP5-Knowles.pdf), critique Putnam's attempt to uphold semantic externalism in spite of rejecting metaphysical realism ('Metaphysical realism and semantic externalism', forthcoming in Interpreting Putnam, Routledge), and consider the prospects for reconciling Wilfrid Sellars' ideal of a synpoptic vision of human and physical reality within a neo-pragmatist anti-representationalist framework ('A synoptic vision after the anti-representationalist turn? Prospects and possibilities' forthcoming in The Sellarsian Mind, edited by Jeremey Koons, Oxford University Press).
