Jon Are Suul har en stilling som Førsteamanuensis II i regulering av maritime kraftomformingssystemer ved Institutt for teknisk kybernetikk, og arbeider også som forsker ved SINTEF Energi. Han har en PhD grad fra NTNUs Institutt for elkraftteknikk og arbeider med modellering, regulering og analyse av kraftelektroniske energiomformingssystemer.
