  • Beslutninger under usikkerhet, spesielt normativ usikkerhet

Forskningsprosjekt

«Ethical Aspects of Deep Sea Mining»

Postdoctoral project at NTNU and Northeastern University.

Deep Sea Mining (DSM) involves retrieving mineral deposits from the ocean floor at great depths and in ecologically complex environments. DSM is an emerging technology and is not yet conducted on a commercial scale. I look at how DSM affects the environment and the values associated with it. I develop a view of how to think of the relation between such values and normativty: what does the value of nature imply for our reasons for action in particular cases? I moreover consider arguments from need in natural resource debates – for example, the argument that there is a need for minerals from DSM in order to manage the transition to 'green' economies – and develop a theory of how to assess the moral significance of needs (called the relational account of needs).
