Om oss (www.yaksilab.com)

Laboratoriet vårt består av engasjerte biologer, fysikere og ingeniører som jobber sammen for å forstå hvordan hjerneceller og nervesystemet fungerer og utvikler seg – både hos friske og syke. For å gjøre dette bruker vi små forsøksdyr som er genetisk enkle å jobbe med, som sebrafisk og bananflue. Vi studerer hjernen ved å kombinere avanserte teknikker som bildebehandling, optogenetikk (styring av celler med lys), elektriske målinger, genetiske metoder og atferdsanalyser.

Vi har to hovedforskningsområder:

1. Hvordan hjernen tolker sanser:
Vi undersøker hvordan hjernen bearbeider lukt, syn og smak – og hvordan dette styrer atferd som frykt, sult og våkenhet. Vi ser også på hvordan tilstander som stress, sult eller reproduksjon påvirker hvordan hjernen tolker sanseinntrykk. Vi fokuserer på deler av hjernen som kobler sammen flere sanser og er nært knyttet til atferd, som telencephalon, habenula og hjernestammen. Sebrafiskens lille og gjennomsiktige hjerne gjør det mulig å studere slike prosesser i detalj.

2. Hjerneforandringer ved nevrologiske sykdommer:
Vi samarbeider med andre forskere for å studere hvordan hjernens nettverk forandres ved sykdommer som epilepsi eller Fragilt X-syndrom. Vi bruker verktøy fra system-nevrovitenskap på sebrafisk og bananflue for å forstå endringer i hvordan hjernen er koblet sammen og hvordan signaler behandles.

På lang sikt håper vi at forskningen vår kan hjelpe andre forskere til å forstå og etterligne hjernefunksjoner, og gi innsikt i sykdommer som stress, angst, spiseforstyrrelser og nevrodegenerative sykdommer – og inspirere til nye behandlinger.
