Faglig innhold

The course is taught entirely in English. The examination and assessment will also be conducted in English. Welfare economic issues related to the supply and demand of goods and services in society. The supply side involves the commercial sector, the public sector but also stakeholders operating in the non-profit sector such as sport and culture activities. Special attention is paid on the public sector, including its role in reducing market failure. Public choice theory, including decision-making processes in the public sector as well as analysis of redistribution policies are adressed. This includes various forms of tax policy. Analyses of policies used reduce environmental problems are also addressed.

Læringsutbytte

  • Acquire knowledge about welfare economic issues related to the supply and demand of goods and services in society.
  • Acquire knowledge about the aims and behaviour of the stakeholders operating at the supply side, including commercial producers, the public sector, but also stakeholders in the non-profit sector such as sport and culture activities.
  • Acquire a thorough understanding of the role of the public sector, both as producer and regulator of the economy.
  • Acquire knowledge about public choice theory, including decision-making processes in the public sector
  • Acquire knowledge about various forms of redistribution policies, with special attention on tax policies.
  • Acquire knowledge about policies applied to reduce various forms of market failures, as for example negative environmental impacts.

Skill

  • Based on welfare economic theory perspectives, being able to describe the behaviour and interaction of the stakeholders operating at the supply side in the society.
  • Understand the reasons for public intervention in the economy.
  • Describe the challenges of efficiently implement the regulations.
  • Describe the public sector’s role as producer and regulator in the economy.
  • Understand the challenges of preventing and/or reducing various forms of market failures in the economy.
  • Explain the welfare economic issues related to the various market forms

General competence

  • Through this course develop an understanding of the aim and behavior of the stakeholders operating as producers and distributors of goods and services, based on welfare economic theory.
  • Understand the needs for various forms of regulations of the economy
  • Understand the challenges of efficiently implement the regulations.
  • Acquire a thorough understanding of the role of the public sector as producer and regulator.

Four hours school examination.

Examination aids:

  • Approved calculator in accordance with NTNU's support material code B-D "specific basic calculator".
  • Other calculators that are allowed in the course are: Casio FC-100V and Texas Instruments - BAII Plus.

Forkunnskapskrav

Students needs to have a basic course in microeconomics.
