Faglig innhold

The course aims to provide candidates with insight into recent theorethical discussions in geography, and how these discussions relate to key theoretical stands in the discipline. The emphasis of the course will be on higherorder theoretical discussions and core concepts in geography with particular emphasis on theoretical positioning and how to theorise in geography.

Læringsutbytte

By participating in this course the candidate will gain insight into processes of theorizing and engaging with theory in Geography. The course aims to provide the participants with tools to think, discuss and write theoretically about geographical research, by identifying, critically assessing and positioning themselves in relation to recent theoretical discussions in geography through a reflection paper.

The course will enable PhD candidates to reflect on the relationship between the individual PhD project and its theoretical position in current debates in geography.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

The course is organized in two activities: seminar and the writing of a reflection note. Before the seminar starts, participants submit a draft reflection note. The seminar provides lectures by scholars who are international capacities in their field. During the seminar, the candidates must present the draft reflection note. After the seminar, the candidates finalize the reflection note discussing the individual PhD project, preferably connecting to their own project, to the current debates and course readings. The reflection note will be commented upon by fellow course participants and later approved by the department. Activities: Seminar, lectures, presentation of reflection note, reflection note writing followed by peer reviewing. Compulsory assignments: Participation in seminar, written reflection note and peer reviewing of reflection note. Form of assessment: Approved reflection note. The course is taught in English.

Forkunnskapskrav

MA in Geography or equivalent. Must have a PhD. project before entering this course.
