Faglig innhold
The course provides opportunities for students to develop systematic knowledge on how young people are impacted by and respond to various development processes. It engages with how national and international development goals (Millennium Development Goals/Sustainable Development Goals) and policies (such as structural adjustment programs, international trade) translate into and influence the wellbeing of children and young people in the global south. The course also presents critical perspectives on the interplay between childhood, culture and sustainable development. Specific topics covered include
- an overview of development theories and childhood theories
- young people and socio-cultural change
- the meanings and values of children
- interventions for children in difficult circumstances (e.g. street children, refugee children)
- child labour/children's work
- children's rights in international development
- gender and education
- children, migration and social change
- childhood poverty
- impacts of HIV/AIDS on children
- politics of orphanhood
- children and emergency circumstances
- youth, participation and political activism
Læringsutbytte
Knowledge
The student has:
- In-depth knowledge on how children in diverse familial, social, economic, cultural and political contexts of the global South fare in their lives.
- Advanced interdisciplinary understanding of the complex interrelationship between development processes and young people's everyday lives.
- Knowledge of diverse programs and interventions to enhance the well-being of children and young people in the global south.
Skills
The student has:
- The skill of critically evaluating ongoing research and scholarship in the field of children and socio-economic and cultural change.
General competence
The student has:
- A general understanding of the experiences and expectations of childhood in the global south.
Læringsformer og aktiviteter
Total lecture hours: ca. 20 hours. The course begins with a series of lectures that draw on a selected reading list that constitutes a compendium. Students are required to write a term paper on a topic related to the content of the course. The term paper is not graded, but it needs to be submitted and approved before students are qualified for the final written examination.
Obligatoriske aktiviteter
- Approved term paper. Attending lectures is compulsory (minimum 80%).
Mer om vurdering
Students who have completed compulsory activities do not have to do these again before re-sitting the exam.
Forkunnskapskrav
Admittance to the course requires a bachelor's degree in social science or equivalent.
