Seed funding
NTNU’s strategic area within Health and Life Science is announcing this year’s opportunity for seed funding. The purpose of the seed funding call is to strengthen interdisciplinary research and innovation within this thematic area at NTNU, and to facilitate new external collaborations and strengthening of applications for external project funding.
NTNU Health and Life Science aims to provide knowledge and technology for health-promoting societies and a sustainable health service. Projects that contribute towards these main goals may apply for funding. A special focus will be placed on developing knowledge and technology in the following areas:
- One Health: How does the interaction between people, animals, and the environment influence health?
- Healthy life spans: What are the causes behind major public health challenges? How can we prevent disease and promote health throughout the lifespan?
- Value-based health care: Optimal and efficient organization of health services while supporting quality of life.
For more information about the aims and focus areas, see our website (under construction; still in Norwegian only).
Who can apply?
All NTNU employees in temporary or permanent academic positions can apply. The project must take place in 2024 and/or 2025, and the funds must be spent by November 2025.
What can you apply for?
Each project can apply for NOK 20.000-200.000, and 5-10 projects will be funded in total.
Examples of projects are:
- Pilot/proof-of-concept studies
- Running costs for using equipment and existing infrastructure at NTNU
- Workshops, seminars and study trips with the aim of establishing national and international collaborations/networks
- Preliminary explorations of access to data and innovation potential
Application requirements
- The proposal must fall within the scope and aims of NTNU Health and Life Science (stated above).
- Description of the project’s importance and future contribution towards attracting external project funding, which can involve establishment of national or international collaborations/consortia, preliminary data for strengthening project proposals, development of innovation potential, etc.
- Interdisciplinarity: Contribution from participants with different scientific expertise should be highlighted. It is encouraged to include active participants from at least two faculties.
- Pilot/proof-of-concept studies should highlight how local infrastructure at NTNU will be used.
- A budget with cost distribution in 2024-25 showing in detail how the funding will be spent. Any additional project-related costs and funding sources should also be included.
Evaluation criteria
I) The project’s significance for future project development and ambitions, II) scientific originality and ambitions, III) feasibility, IV) use of infrastructure and resources at NTNU, V) recognition of the project’s sustainability aspects, and if otherwise equal VI) relevance for the thematic focus areas.
The final priority of the applications and awarded funding will be decided by the strategic council of NTNU Health and Life Science.
The application deadline was March 15th, 2024. A decision can be expected in April and projects can start from May 2024.
