Development of Carbon Dioxide Removals: pros and cons

The deep sea is one of Earth’s largest and least explored environments, supporting unique ecosystems and processes that are connected to human society. Climate change, fishing, mining, pollution, energy production and new technologies are transforming these remote environments. At the same time deep sea provides resources, ecosystem functions, scientific knowledge and inspiration that shape the humanity. How should we understand, use and protect this hidden part of our planet? These questions cannot be answered by science alone. They require perspectives from technology, law, economics, conservation, politics, culture and the arts. The village invites students to explore the complex two-way relationship between humanity and the deep sea.

Relevant competency

The village welcomes students from all academic backgrounds. Understanding the deep sea as a shared human heritage requires many different perspectives and forms of expertise. Natural scientists and engineers can contribute knowledge of ecosystems, ocean processes, technology and resource use. Students of social sciences can explore economics, governance, politics, sustainability and societal impacts, while students of law can examine international regulations, ownership and the protection of marine areas. Students from the humanities and arts can investigate cultural perceptions, ethics, communication, storytelling and humanity’s relationship with the ocean. Students with backgrounds in business, design, data science, technology or other disciplines can contribute new approaches to innovation, management and communication. No previous knowledge of deep-sea science is required.

About the village

The deep sea may seem distant from our everyday lives, but it is closely connected to humanity through climate regulation, food, natural resources, energy, technology and global economies. At the same time, human activities are increasingly reaching into the deep ocean. The village will investigate this relationship from two complementary directions: How do humans influence the deep sea, and how does the deep sea influence humanity? Students will be encouraged to move beyond disciplinary boundaries and consider scientific, technological, environmental, economic, legal, ethical and cultural perspectives.

Possible themes include:

  • Conservation: how can unique and poorly understood ecosystems be protected?
  • Climate and carbon: what role does the deep ocean play in regulating our climate?
  • Fishing mesopelagic organisms: yes or no?
  • Law and governance: who owns the deep sea, who regulates it, and how should international rules evolve?
  • How do art, literature, popular culture shape our perception of an environment most people will never see?
  • The future of the deep sea: should we exploit, protect, restore, or leave parts of the deep ocean untouched?
