Om

Matteo Formolli is a PhD candidate working at the Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhood in Smart Cities (FME ZEN).
He holds a BSc in Architectural Design from the Polytechnic University of Milan and an MSc in Sustainable Architecture from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The aim of his PhD is to explore planning and design solutions for zero-emission neighbourhoods at high latitudes, with the optimization and integration of solar energy use at different scales of the project. The mutual interaction among different aspects such as energy generation and use, power needs and flexibility, daylight, materials, building form and architectural qualities, are analysed.

The main objectives are:

  • Identify and develop planning and design strategies to increase solar energy use and integration at different domains/scales.
  • Using, testing, developing and evaluating tools and methodologies for planning and design strategies as well as the integration of solar energy systems into new and existing environments at different scales: from neighbourhood to building until downscale into components.
  • Assess environmental impact, with a focus on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions based on the optimal use of solar energy and technology.

The project is part of the WP6 "Pilot Projects and Living Labs" within FME ZEN Research Centre and is connected to the international network of the IEA Task 63 "Solar Neighbourhood Planning".
