Marek Thue KRETSCHMER was trained in classics (Greek and Latin) at the University of Bergen (candidatus philologiae, 2001) where he also became an associated member of the Centre for Medieval Studies, specializing in Medieval Latin, manuscript studies and textual criticism with Professor Lars Boje Mortensen.
After earning a Doctorate in Latin in 2006, Kretschmer has spent his career as an Associate Professor of Latin (2006-2011) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology where he was promoted to Full Professor of Medieval Latin Literature in 2011.
He has published widely in the field of Latin literature and especially on the medieval reception of the Latin classics (with contributions to the Cambridge Companions to Latin Love Elegy and Roman Comedy). Among his fields of expertise are the medieval French and Latin reception of Ovid (esp. the Ovide moralisé and Pierre Bersuire's Ovidius moralizatus which he is editing), Medieval Latin poetry (publishing the first monograph on the Versus Eporedienses) and historiography (with both a monograph in the Mittellateinische Studien und Texte and an edited volume in Textes et Études du Moyen Âge). His articles on different aspects of Medieval Latin Literature, ranging from literary topics (mythography, allegory, symbolism) to various philological issues (metrics and style or questions related to manuscript traditions etc) or specific authors (such as Paul the Deacon, Hrotsvit of Gandersheim, Baudri of Bourgueil, Hugh Primas, Otto of Freising, Serlo of Wilton and Gerald of Wales), have been published in the leading journals of the field : Mittellateinisches Jahrbuch, Filologia Mediolatina, The Journal of Medieval Latin, Revue d'histore des textes, Studi Medievali, Latomus, Viator etc. (for details see below).
