Caitlin Mandeville

I am a postdoctoral researcher based jointly at the Gjærevoll Centre for Biodiversity Foresight Analyses and the NTNU Department of Natural History. As a conservation scientist, I apply interdisciplinary approaches to understand changing environments and promote socioecological resilience. I regularly work in partnership with communities and societal sectors affected by changing environmental conditions.
My research interests span participatory biodiversity research approaches, citizen and community science, spatial ecological modeling, impacts of land use change, effectiveness of area-based management, translational science, evidence synthesis, and open and FAIR data sharing and reuse. I am committed to teaching, mentorship, and outreach, and pursue additional lines of research related to improving the effectiveness of these commitments. I am enthusiastic about interdisciplinary collaboration and work that extends outside of the academic sector.
Current projects
FOOTPRINTS-CITSCI (Feedback Loop: Taxonomic ID from Photo Recognition, Integrated Species distribution modeling, and Citizen Science). 2024 – 2025. Funded as a 3rd Party Project within the framework of the TETTRIs Project funded under Grant Agreement Nr 101081903 of the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme. Co-principal investigator. This project integrates citizen science biodiversity monitoring via snow track surveys with machine learning image recognition and biodiversity hotspot mapping to enhance public engagement with biodiversity in Norway.
Nordic Symposium for Biodiversity Across the Natural and Social Sciences. 2024 – 2025. Funded by the Nordic Board for Wildlife Research. Principal investigator. The Symposium brings together selected researchers to explore, discuss, and write together, with a goal of advancing interdisciplinary collaboration related to biodiversity, nature, and wildlife in the Nordic region.
Against Research Monoculture: Nurturing Transdisciplinary Biodiversity Research & Pedagogy. 2024. Funded by Gjærevoll Centre Seed Funding. Co-principal investigator. The project facilitates collaboration related to biodiversity and nature across the arts, sciences, and humanities.
BiodiverCITY - Island Hopping. 2024 – 2027. Funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research "Sparkling Science" program. The project engages students and citizen science participants to investigate the role of urban green spaces as "biodiversity islands" that support pollinator species.
Research networks
I contribute to national and international networks including the DiverSea Horizon Europe consortium, Living Norway Ecological Data Network, GBIF Norway, the Global Citizen Science Partnership, and the American Geophysical Union Thriving Earth Exchange.
