Om
Fixate on any visible object in front of you and form a rough idea of what it would be like to lick it. Remarkably, you can do this with anything. Simply keep the idea of what licking it would be like in mind, and anything you look at will line up accordingly. This is a feat of introspection. Now try to describe what that experience is like; perhaps you can feel the object on your tongue? My primary research interests concern the place of introspection and description for settling questions about the nature of perceptual experience: Is there a way things should introspectively be like if this or that theory of the nature of perceptual character is true? What is the relationship between introspection and description? Can our descriptions lead our explanations astray, or are they neutral about which theory is true? In my thesis, I draw on the phenomenological tradition to investigate the relationship between introspection, description, and theories of the nature of perceptual experience.
