Does Training General Practitioners in Supervision Skills Improve Medical Students' Communication Skills?
Summary
The involvement of general practitioners (GPs) in medical education is increasing, and general practice is well situated to be an important setting for medical student education in the future. GPs are being asked to take new academic roles for which they have little formal training. One prime area is the supervision of medical students, particularly with regard to communication skills. Despite this, few studies have tested interventions to improve GPs' supervision skills. The aim of this study is to therefore investigate the effects of an educational intervention to improve GPs' supervision skills. To study this, a randomized controlled trial and focus group interviews will be conducted. In total, 22 GP teachers and 120 first-year medical students will be included. The educational intervention will consist of a two-day course in supervision, in which GP teachers are practicing supervision and receiving feedback in small group sessions. In addition, a "model video" showing good examples of supervision skills will be developed and become part of the intervention. This project will be conducted as a PhD project by a GP.
