Faglig innhold

Visual appearance is a complex phenomenon that integrates different percepts which, when combined, signal the properties and affordances of a material or of a scene to the observer. The principal attributes of appearance relate to the passage of light from and through the material – these include colour, gloss, translucency, transparency and spatial non-uniformity (or texture).

The course is strongly linked to current research on these topics, with input from specialist researchers, and it aims to give the student both an insight into current theories and models of appearance, and experience in measuring and modelling specific attributes. It also aims to introduce the concept of total appearance and understand the way that different appearance attributes contribute to it.

Læringsutbytte

Kunnskap • Describe the visual pathways involved in appearance • Identify the main attributes of appearance and review previous research on the topic • Discuss the specificity of perception to an individual observer and the implications for measurement and modelling • Demonstrate a knowledge of appropriate metrology for appearance • Describe methods of obtaining data on visual appearance through psychophysical experiment

Ferdigheter • Design and conduct experiments in appearance research • Prepare samples for appearance research • Generate and test models of appearance attributes • Apply appearance models to measurement data in order to predict appearance phenomena • Propose designs for novel instruments for appearance measurement • Measure and predict differences in appearance attributes • Analyse the results of psychopysical experiments

Generell kompetanse • Evaluate previous research on appearance and describe how the students results fit with such work • Contribute to the state of the art in appearance research • Present results to a specialist audience

Mer om vurdering

Students will complete two coursework projects, weighted 40% and 60% respectively. Grades will be given on the scale A-F. The student must obtain a pass in both elements of assessment in order to complete the course. For the 40% project, the grade will be based on a presentation and a written report. For the 60%, the grade will be based solely on the written report.

There will be a re-sit for the project at the end of February or in March.
