Faglig innhold

The course aims to provide the candidates with a knowledge base and tools that help them to maneuver in the complex landscape of theory and theoretical discussions in geography.

Læringsutbytte

Knowledge:

  • Through participating in this course the candidate will gain insight into processes of theorizing and engaging with theory in Geography.

Skills:

  • The course provide the participants with tools to think, discuss and write theoretically about geographical research, by identifying, critically assessing and positioning themselves in relation to recent theoretical discussions in geography.

General competence:

  • The course will enable the PhD candidates to reflect on the relationship between the individual PhD project and its theoretical position in current debates in geography.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

The course is organized around two activities: seminar and academic writing. Before the seminar, participants must submit a reflection note to form the basis of their paper. The seminar consists of lectures by scholars who are international capacities in their field. During the seminar, the candidates must present the draft paper. After the seminar, the candidates finalize the paper on relevant theoretical perspectives in geography, connecting to their own PhD project, current debates and course readings. The paper will be commented upon by fellow course participants and later approved by the department. Activities: Seminar, lectures, presentation of paper, paper writing, peer review. Compulsory assignments: Seminar participation, written paper and peer reviewing of paper. Form of assessment: Approved paper. The course is taught in English.

The course will only be tought if there are 5 students or more registered at the course, and if we have available teaching resources.

Mer om vurdering

1. Circulating paper to peer group established at course, commenting co-participant`s paper.

2. Submission to Department of Geography(NTNU) of 6000-8000- word paper on theoretical positioning or development for theoretical framework for PhD thesis.

Forkunnskapskrav

MA in Geography or equivalent. Candidates must have started a PhD. project before taking this course.
