Investigation on performance gap and scenario analysis for closing performance gap in high-efficient buildings
A Combination of Data Analysis and Simulations: Case Study of the ZEB Laboratory
Significant discrepancies between predicted and actual energy use challenge the effectiveness of zero-emission buildings. At the ZEB Laboratory in Trondheim, Norway, operational energy demand has exceeded design-phase simulations by over 60%. This study investigates the underlying causes of this performance gap by developing and analysing four energy models with varying levels of detail and HVAC complexity. Using Grasshopper and Ladybug Tools, simulation results are compared to real-world data to evaluate the effects of operational schedules and modelling accuracy. Practical adjustments are proposed to enhance performance, offering insights into more reliable energy modelling and improved operation of high-performance buildings.
